The United Nations on Friday largely endorsed a resolution to promote maps that reflect the true scale of continents after an African-led campaign to move away from the ubiquitous 16th-century Mercator projection.

Abidjan (AFP) – Life returned to normal in Niger's capital, Niamey, on Sunday, after the military regime and its Russian paramilitary partners put down a mutiny by soldiers.

Intense fighting took place overnight from Friday to Saturday, with the army and its Russian Africa Corps allies managing to take back control late in the day.

Niger's military regime said Saturday it was "gradually regaining control" after mutineers held soldiers hostage at a military base next to the capital's airport. Sustained gunfire and explosions were reported across several areas of Niamey, including the airport and near the presidential palace. 

In a statement read out on public television and signed by Defence Minister General Salifou Mody, the authorities called on the public to "remain calm and freely go about their business".

Im nahen Fluss, dem wichtigsten des Landes, starben die Fische, auch Dutzende Kilometer stromabwärts.

Violence against healthcare workers in DRC hampers Ebola response

Healthcare workers in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been coming under attack, the United Nations and Red Cross have warned, hampering efforts to stem the spread of the Ebola virus, which is spreading 'exponentially'.

Après une rupture actée par le Tchad de la coopération militaire entre le pays et la France, un nouvel accord semble restaurer cette relation bi-latérale.

Si la France n'établit toutefois pas de bases permanentes au Tchad pour le moment, le traité stipule que les militaires français participent à la formation des effectifs tchadiens, à la collecte du renseignement et au soutien aérien de l’armée tchadienne depuis le mois d’avril.
