Burkina Faso’s Council of Ministers has adopted a bill to restore the death penalty, targeting offenses such as treason, terrorism and espionage, authorities said.

“The adoption of this bill is part of reforms ... to have a justice that responds to the deep aspirations of our people,” Minister of Justice Edasso Rodrigue Bayala said in a Facebook post late Thursday.

Former Madagascan President Andry Rajoelina, who was ousted in a coup last week, has been stripped of his citizenship by the new regime.

The order, signed by new Prime Minister Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo, cited local laws stipulating that people who acquired foreign citizenship should lose their Malagasy nationality.

Rajoelina, 51, obtained French citizenship a decade ago, prompting calls for his disqualification from the 2023 presidential election. But he defied those calls and went on to win.

(dpa) - A good twenty years after the massacres in Darfur in Sudan, an ex-militia chief has been found guilty by the International Criminal Court. Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman was convicted by the judges in The Hague of 31 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity - including murder, rape and torture. The sentence will be decided at a later date.
