Sport als Medium der Entwicklungshilfe

Seit der Vergabe der Fußball-WM 2010 an Südafrika ist Sport ein beachtetes Thema der Entwicklungshilfe. Doch die Finanzierung vieler Projekte ist befristet, die Fluktuation der Mitarbeiter hoch. Ob die Projekte die Lebenssituationen vor Ort tatsächlich verbessern, lässt sich schwer bemessen.

John Mwangi’s 22-year-old car is his lifeline. His run-down Toyota saloon not only ferries him around the streets of the traffic-congested Kenyan capital, Nairobi, but is also his main source of revenue.

Resting against its open boot, surrounded by fresh pumpkins, sweet potatoes and other vegetables, a smiling Mwangi, 34, explained how it has transformed his life. Thanks to this unlikely saviour, he is now a trader, shopkeeper and entrepreneur.

Several others wounded after attackers, armed with guns and machetes, stormed school in city of Kumba, Southwest Region.

At least eight children were killed and a dozen wounded after attackers stormed a school in southwestern Cameroon with guns and machetes, the United Nations said.

Arriving on motorbikes and in civilian clothes, the men attacked the Mother Francisca International Bilingual Academy in the city of Kumba, in the country’s Southwest Region, at around midday on Saturday.

End Sars protests: People 'shot dead' in Lagos, Nigeria

A number of people have reportedly been shot dead or wounded at a protest against police brutality in Nigeria's biggest city, Lagos.

Witnesses and the rights group Amnesty International said several people were killed and wounded when soldiers opened fire.

The state governor said about 25 people had been wounded but only one person had died.

An indefinite 24-hour curfew has been imposed on Lagos and other regions.
