I am convinced of the sincerity of this appeal, the article "Why Africa is losing it's dignity" deserves maximum exposure because it can lead people to pause and rethink their assumptions. Although we may not agree on everything, I am grateful to have you as an ally to shake things up (along with Dambisa Moyo and others).

There is a saying that most Americans are one paycheck away from being homeless (because of personal debt/credit cards/etc.). In the same spirit, I would say that most African countries are one crisis (climate-related event, disputed election, charismatic rebel leader or organized crime syndicate) away from famine or anarchy. Cote d'Ivoire is a sad and telling example of this (thank God, the worst was avoided).

In my opinion, the main focus should be on structural risk reduction, helping viable political entities and institutions to emerge, with a strong focus on peace and security BEFORE economic issues. As long as the foundations are shaky, any crisis can undo ten years of efforts and progress.
