These proposals go to the heart of what development aid was intended to accomplish and what has been forgotten in the rush to build up, and spend, huge aid budgets. Misdirected "aid" not only destroys as much as it builds but also discourages brave men and women who are trying to change their countries for the better, from within. In leadership courses around the world, business school students are being urged to "speak truth to power"; those of us who have seen the perverse effects of aid in the wrong hands must also "speak truth to kindness."
